PHILOSOPHY

The Central Columbia Academy has been developed to provide the staff and educators of the Central Columbia School District with an exemplary training program to support their professional needs and growth.  Academy classes are designed to fulfill Act 48 requirements while developing the skills of our employees.  Satisfactory completion of courses will be based upon attendance, projects, participation and completion of assignments.

Courses being offered are listed in this booklet.  Persons interested in taking a course(s) should notify (e-mail preferred) Brenda Belles at the Central Columbia School District Office at least five working days prior to the start of the program.  Courses will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. RULES

1.       All Central Columbia Academy courses will be offered free-of-charge after school hours.  Certified staff (faculty, administrators, substitute teachers, educational co-ops) will be credited with Act 48 Professional Educational hours, without pay.  Support staff taking special support staff courses will be offered hourly pay as long as the course takes place beyond the employee’s regular work hours.

2.       Course instructors will be paid at the contracted rate of $18 per hour with one hour of planning/evaluation time for each hour of class time.  If a course has more than one instructor, the instructors will share the hourly rate.  Instructors may not receive Act 48 hours for instructing a course.

3.       All course work must be approved and scheduled by the superintendent.  Professional education courses must fit within the parameters of the district’s Act 48 Professional Education Plan and should be related to student achievement of the Pennsylvania academic standards.  Courses may require up to one hour of work outside of class, readings, research, and/or assignments for every one-hour of class time.  Additional assignment time will be credited for Act 48 hours for participants and will be compensated for the instructor.

4.       The course schedule will be published at the beginning of each semester.  Course times may vary but will be offered during off-school hours.  Courses may run from 4 to 20 hours and must meet at least twice.  Enrollment in each course may be limited by the instructor or by available space.

5.       Course hours, pay, etc. will only be granted upon successful completion of the course including all course assignments and attendance at all class sessions.

6.       Interested course instructors should complete the “Professional Education Course Proposal” form (pink-last page of this booklet) and submit it to the superintendent by May 1 for summer and autumn course offerings and by December 1 for spring course offerings.

7.       The instructor will provide course materials.  Textbooks, which may be used as professional resources, will be the responsibility of the student.
